In 1962, with a dream and a Double Bourbon Manhattan, Gisèle Masson sent a wire to her husband, Charles:
“Congratulations! You are the owner of 3 East 52nd Street! Find a name!” On December 19th, 1962, during a blizzard and newspaper strike, La Grenouille was born. From that day on, a loving following began with an array of stars bringing their glamour to La Grenouille. Who could forget the eyes of Sir Laurence Olivier, Paul Newman and Edward G. Robinson; the voices of Richard Burton, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Placido Domingo and Sean Connery; the superb and legendary Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren; the incomparable Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Prince, Madonna, Elton John and Iman; the comedic genius of Alan King, Woody Allen, Johnny Carson and Jimmy Fallon; the extravagant Salvador Dali; the maestros of the fashion world from Mainbocher who created the dress that Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Windsor, wore at her wedding, to the superb and elegant Galanos, Diana Vreeland, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Adolfo, Ungaro and André Leon Talley.
